Monastery
The latest game from the Ragnar Brothers, Monastery is a thoroughly professional production and a fine addition to their oeuvre. (Though I do have a fondness for the 'tea towels' they used to use as a game board.) The theme is the development of a medieval monastery. Each player has a team of monks (nicely scuplted little playing pieces) and their ultimate aim is to complete a fragment of the Lord's Prayer (in Latin, natch).
Each turn players move their monks and add new tiles (buildings, fields and gardens) to the monastery. These produce points that are used to add to your resources – including picking up those letters. The game is hugely tactical with players faced with important choices and trade-offs all the time. Monastery has bags of atmosphere, too, with the monk playing pieces and the use of the canonical hours for turns. Excellent stuff.
For 2-4 players, aged 14+, playing time 60 minutes: £20.00
