Britannia (Classic and Duel Edition)
Yes, a new edition of Lew Pulsipher's classic game of the ebb and flow of peoples across Britain. It starts with the Roman invasion (unstoppable – though Boudicca does her best) and, 16 rounds later, ends with the Norman invasion (also unstoppable). In between, the Angles, Saxons, Danes and many others come and go (and the Welsh endure, probably).
Each player is in charge of a selection of peoples across the game, each scoring points for the areas they hold – or just for conquering. The tricky bit is managing this across the game. Thus, if you have the Romans, you'll score well in the first few rounds, but the others will catch you up later in the game.
It is a brilliant game that I've been playing for some 30 years, but be warned that it involves several hours of intense play and there can be times when you have very little to do. Hence the quicker two-player game, which is new in this edition. This uses a different board with fewer, larger areas and streamlined rules. And, this edition coming from PSC, the game has figures rather than cardboard counters for playing pieces.
For 2/4 players, aged 14+, playing time 90-240 minutes: £70.00 (£58.33 without tax outside the UK)
