Photo of The Great War box lid: British soldiers advance across no man's landThe Great War Centenary Edition

This is a simple wargame that reproduces trench warfare to great effect. Machine guns and field artillery are highly effective weapons, but the trenches provide excellent protection. The problem is that players can't win by just hiding in their trenches! Full marks to Richard Borg for a terrific adaptation of his "Commands & Colors" system to World War One.

On top of this, the highly detailed models from the Plastic Soldier Company are a delight: the game looks superb when set out for play. The scenarios offer a variety of interesting challenges to the players, too, despite inherent repetitiveness of the subject matter.

All in all, this is a terrific game and one that captivated me when I first saw it at the UK Games Expo. The centenary edition, new for 2018, uses slightly softer plastic for the models, so they're less brittle than the originals, and does away with the need to assemble some figures.

It has been enhanced and expanded with the addition of tanks see the Tank expansion and Whippet tanks and, most recently, The French Army.

Cover from the Tank expansion to The Great War: a British tank crossing a trenchTank expansion

The invention that was expected to break the deadlock of trench warfare: the tank. Inside the box are six terrific models: four British Mark IV tanks (two 'male' and two 'female') and two German A7Vs. A substantial rulebook details how to use the tanks in the battle scenarios and provides a lot more scenarios for the game (including some that include the Whippet tanks that come in a separate expansion).

In addition, there are models of field guns and crew (some assembly required), allowing these to be deployed on the battlefield. Plus additional terrain tiles and markers that provide more battlefield features. All in all, this is a substantial expansion that adds a lot to the game.

Be aware: the gun barrels on the tank models are fragile and likely to break off.

For 2 players, aged 14+, playing time 90 minutes: 36.00 (30.00 outside the EU)

The Great War: Whippet tanks expansionWhippet tanks

The Whippets were small, lightly armoured and armed with just machine guns. It was intended as a faster vehicle to exploit gaps in the enemy lines more like the traditional cavalry role. This expansion for The Great War is a small box containing three model Whippet tanks. The models are terrific and they provide an interesting additional option to the game.

There are no scenarios in this expansion, but there are several intriguing scenarios in the Tank expansion that include Whippets.

Cover from The Great War - The French Army - French soldiers charge out of the trenches with tanks in the backgroundThe French Army

This substantial expansion for The Great War does just what it says: provides additional figures (in a fetching blue) for the French army. As you'd expect, alongside this are lots of scenarios (including a dozen on aspects of the battle of Verdun) for using these troops. These bring in some new terrain features, particularly fortifications to be fought over and waterways that get in the way.

The expansion also introduces new 'Special Personnel', providing figures not just for the French army, but also for the Germans and British. When attached to a unit, each of these gives that unit some special ability. Thus Engineers let units clear barbed wire or dig in, Marksmen add an extra die when attacking and Elite units can move further to attack. While these are involved in many of the new scenarios, a section in the rulebook shows how to add them to existing scenarios as well.

All good stuff that I look forward to trying out.

The uninspiring box of The Great War: French tanksFrench tanks

Two detailed models of WW1 French tanks in 1/100th scale: a St Chamond and a Schneider. There are scenarios in the French Army expansion that make use of them. Okay, you don't have to have the correct models, but they do look gorgeous.
