Madeira
The island of Madeira is, of course, the setting for this game. In particular, it's the way the island's economy has developed and changed that is at the heart of the game. Madeira was initially exploited for its wood. Then wheat farms were established, followed by sugar plantations – until undercut by imports from other parts of the world, when producing Madeira wine became the chief industry.
Over the course of the game, players will have to develop and adapt their business as the world changes around them. They will need to farm, develop the cities and establish trading routes. From time to time, they will also have the opportunity to meet 'requests' from the Portuguese Crown – in themselves potentially very prestigious. It's prestige that wins the game, but timing is everything.
For 2-4 players, aged 12+, playing time 2 hours: £38.00 (£31.67 without tax outside the UK)
