Undaunted
There are two games in this series so far, both with the same core mechanisms. They use deck-building (and -destroying) to power a game of tactical combat in World War 2: in Normandy and North Africa. And tactics are key, not firepower – though that helps. Careful scouting before committing your soldiers can pay dividends. I got to play an introductory scenario (of Undaunted: Normandy) at the 2019 UK Games
Expo that just whetted my appetite for the
full game.
Apart from manoeuvring their troops on the tiles that show the terrain of a scenario, players must also manage their cards. The more cards for a particular squad, the more powerful it is, but the bigger your deck, the longer it takes to get the cards you want. And then there are the 'Fog of War' cards that bulk out your deck to no purpose.
Undaunted: Normandy
The first game is set after D-Day and pits the squads of a standard US rifle platoon against its German counterparts. As this suggests, the action is all about the poor bloody infantry, with heavy machine guns and mortars providing a particular challenge.
Each scenario is carefully put together and shows a detail of a larger battle. A dozen of them come with the game and you can string these together as a campaign. If that's not enough, there
are a couple
more official scenarios on the Osprey website – and several unofficial ones on BGG.
For 2 players, aged 14+, playing time 45-60 minutes (for one scenario): £25.00 (£20.83 tax free outside the UK)
