This was one of my discoveries of 2018: a cracking little civilisation-development game. Like others of the type, it's set around the Mediterranean and players buy cards representing various aspects of civilisation to improve their position. However, after this the game has some ingenious and unusual mechanisms.
To start with, players' actions are limited by how much 'time' they take. When you take an action, you place the action chit on your time track along with 'hour glass' chits according to how long it takes. Once your track is full, you're done for the round. However, players have the option of taking one- or two-hour chits. Sounds a no-brainer, eh? Except that the two-hour chits last for two rounds. The game is full of clever touches like this.
The key thing, however, is to meet the requirements to get the civilisation cards that score points – though building cities is a good idea, too. There's a lot to think about in what is a terrifically entertaining game.
For 1-4 players, aged 12+, playing time 90 minutes: £35.00 (£29.17 without tax outside the UK)
