The Glade

With its pretty artwork of forest flora and fauna, the 2023 game from Richard Breese feels lighter than his normal fare. Don't be fooled!

Essentially, players collect tiles with woodland icons and play them onto their own board to collect the crucial toadstools. The first challenge is complying with the rules on placing tiles – this gets trickier as your board fills up. Then you have to think whether you can collect a toadstool with the tiles you place.

And then there's the possibility of placing a toadstool on the central board. Or taking one. Or putting a tile on someone else's board. But the key thing to remember is that it's toadstools that score points. Phew.

If that gets too easy, there's a trickier version to try. And a solitaire game where you aim to play as few turns as possible while scoring as many points as possible – it's also a useful way to get to grips with the rules.
