Oh my Goods! Big Box
"Big Box" is relative – the original game was a two-packs-of-cards box, so this is a mere 12 x 10 x 7 cms. Much bigger than the original, but still a small box in absolute terms. And inside are the original Oh my Goods! and both expansions.
I was captivated by this neat game when I was introduced to it. The cards can be used in several ways. First off, they're buildings, constructed with the goods (also cards) produced from players' existing buildings. And the game ends once somebody has eight buildings. Finally, cards are also the raw materials for the 'production chains' on buildings, producing more advanced goods.
On top of this, players have to decide what resources they will use each turn with only partial information on what will be available. This clever mechanism adds a push-your-luck element to the game. It may be physically smaller than the designer's other titles (such as Great Western Trail), but it's just
as challenging.
The first expansion, Longsdale in Revolt adds a setting – Longsdale – and story-telling elements to the game. This version of the game is played in chapters, each powered by a deck of event cards that governs when the game will end. And Escape to Canyon Brook adds new chapters to the story. (This idea is taken further in Expedition to Newdale.)
Note: this game is not shrink-wrapped (the box has a couple of seals instead).
For 1-4 players, aged 10+, playing time 30-45 minutes: £24.00 (£20.00 without tax outside the UK)
