Molly House
Yes, this is a game about the queer (the term the designers use) community in early 18th century London. It was very much an underground sub-culture whose members had to be careful of exposure even as they celebrated who they were. This is reflected in the game, where increasing your reputation is good for you, but also exposes you to gossip and the risk of arrest and indictment.
The central mechanism of the game is a sort of co-operative card play (with what could almost be standard playing cards) as players put on festivities – with rewards for those who help. The four colours of the card suits match the Molly house spaces at the corners of the board, regulating what players gain (or lose) as they move round, cruising, shopping and throwing festivities.
While the main idea is to increase joy – both players' own and the general community joy – exposure may lead some to switch sides and become informers. Depending on how the game ends, either the most joyful or the best informer wins! There's just bags of atmosphere in this clever, intricate game.
For 1-5 players, aged 14+, playing time 1-2 hours: £55.00 (£45.83 tax free outside the UK)
