Peloponnes

This was the first game from Bernd Eisenstein and Irongames that I came across and it's a cracker. Set in Ancient Greece (the Peloponnes is the southern part of mainland Greece), players develop their city state by adding tiles. First, though, they've got to get the tiles. Each round starts with a clever bidding mechanism through which players try to get the tiles they want.

Land tiles produce resources, building tiles provide special abilities and both are very useful. The key, though is gaining and supporting a bigger population. And dealing with various disasters as they occur. The game plays quickly – there are just eight rounds – to a satisfying conclusion. As I said, it's a cracker!

I also have the Box of expansions and the latest expansion, Heroes and Colonies (below), plus the Peloponnes Card Game.

Peloponnes Box (of expansions)

This box brings together all the earlier (than Heroes and Colonies) expansions for Peloponnes with the addition of a new mini-expansion. The Victoria expansion gives each player a once-per-game opportunity to buy a second tile in their turn.

In particular, adding the Box to the base game allows eight players to take part and offers lots of variety in starting positions.

Peloponnes: Heroes and Colonies (expansion)

This is a substantial expansion for the original game which adds several new elements. First are the heroes: leaders with individual powers that give each player different strengths. Second is the Colonies, which replace the original players' boards. Again, this provides more variety and options for players.

This expansion also introduces the Persians. This is another disaster that can (and probably will) strike during the game. As with the existing disasters, players need to defend against it or suffer the consequences.

All in all, it's a clever addition to the game that expands players' options and provides more depth to play.
