Pillars of the Earth
This is based on Ken Follett's novel of the same name and it's a classic worker-placement game. The theme, like the plot of the novel, is the construction of a medieval cathedral. Players collect raw materials to contribute to the building using the craftsmen they recruit – combining the two is crucial.
On top of this, the incidents of the novel are reproduced as events in the game that players must cope with. Best of all, though are the chunky wooden pieces of the cathedral itself that are added to the board at the end of each round.
The novel spawned a couple of sequels and each has had a game designed around it as well.
For 2-4 players, aged 12+, playing time 90-120 minutes: £32.00 (£26.67 without tax outside the UK)
