Power Grid (Recharged)
I consider Power Grid to be Friedemann Friese's masterpiece. The game is about competing electricity companies. Players must invest in power stations, replacing those
they consider obsolete. They must then buy the coal, oil or uranium that fuels their stations (unless they went green, of course). However, the crucial thing is to connect cities on the board so that you can supply power to them. The winning criterion is the number of cities you can power, which requires the connections, the fuel and the power stations.
Behind all of this lies money: players must supply enough cities to produce the cash they need to acquire power stations – which are auctioned rather than just bought – while having enough left over to buy fuel and to pay for new connections. It is a tricky balancing act that requires planning and a bit of luck to carry off successfully. I think it's a brilliant game. Now, why am I always 1 buck short?
The Recharged version of the game (launched in 2019) adds a few clever tweaks. My favourite is that, if it doesn't sell, the cheapest power plant in the auction is discounted to a minimum bid of just 1 'electro'. Suddenly it might be worth buying, just because it's so cheap!
For 2-6 players, aged 12+, playing time 120 minutes: £40.00 (£33.33 outside the EU)
