Cacao
Mmm, chocolate… Well, the beginnings of it, anyway. This game is about cultivating and harvesting cocoa beans in the South American jungle. As well as establishing plantations in the jungle, players will need a water supply and markets to sell their beans at (and money is what wins the game). And they may find gold mines and ancient temples.
Mechanically, this is a tile-placing game, using square tiles. Players' own tiles show workers on the edges and want to get them alongside the features in order to use/score them. Placing the tiles may also trigger the placement of general tiles, offering some interesting tactical opportunities.
In the final stage of the game players may be able to replace some of their worker tiles. This is a neat twist that requires some serious thinking. I came to Cacao late, but have been thoroughly enjoying it – it's a bit on the abstract side, but not too demanding.
For 1-4 players, aged 8+, playing time 45 minutes: £25.00 (£20.83 tax-free outside the UK)
