Concordia Venus
This is essentially a second, revised edition of Concordia. Most of the game remains the same, but there are various tweaks and additional material in the box. However, everything is compatible with the original game, including, importantly the game expansions.
It is still a very simple game: each turn you play a card. That's it. Of course, it's what the cards let you do that makes the game. Each player starts with the same set of cards and can buy more cards – including cards that are not in the starting sets.
Concordia Venus has four maps (two double-sided boards) that let you play across the whole Roman Empire (around the Mediterranean Sea), across Greece and its islands, around Cyprus or the Ionian sea. Using their cards, players move their colonists from city to city, build houses and produce, buy and sell goods. Crucially, one card lets them pick all their cards back up again!
At the end of the game, players will score for their money, goods and colonists and for cities and provinces they occupy, according to the types of cards they hold. Thus players are collecting cards not just for the action they provide, but also for the boost to their score and to help collect the things they will score for. It's the relationship between these different uses of the cards that gives players something to think about.
There'are rules for team play – which is how you get to 6 players in this version of the game – which puts players into pairs.
These expansions for the original Concordia can be used with Concordia Venus:
Britannia/Germania – a double-sided board (two maps) with some rule tweaks;
Roma/Sicilia – a double-sided board (two maps) with some rule tweaks;
Salsa – adds Salt, a wild commodity, plus maps for Byzantium and Hispania;
Solitaria – rules for solitaire play (or a team of two).
For 2-6 players, aged 12+, playing time 60-120 minutes: £50.00 (£41.67 tax free outside the UK)
