Concordia
This is a very simple game: each turn you play a card. That's it. Of course, it's what the cards let you do that makes the game. Each player starts with the same set of cards and can buy more cards – including cards that are not in the starting sets. It's the Consul and Senator cards that let you do this.
As the card names suggest, the game is set in ancient Rome – the two sides of the board let you play in Italy or across the whole Roman Empire (set around the Mediterranean Sea, of course). Using their cards, players move their colonists from city to city, build houses and produce, buy and sell goods. Crucially, one card lets them pick all their cards back up again!
At the end of the game, players will score for their money, goods and colonists and for cities and provinces they occupy, according to the types of cards they hold. Thus players are collecting cards not just for the action they provide, but also for the boost to their score and to help collect the things they will score for. It's the relationship between these different uses of the cards that gives players something to think about.
Concordia is another cracking game from designer Mac Gerdts, though without his trademark roundel mechanism this time. I have the Salsa and Solitaria expansions plus the 8-card Forums mini-expansion.
An alternative, with even more in the box, is Concordia Venus – essentially a second/revised edition of the game that adds the goddess Venus, more maps and different ways of paying.
For 2-5 players, aged 10+, playing time 100 minutes: £35.00 (£29.17 tax free outside the UK)

Concordia: Britannia/Germania
As you'd expect, it's a double-sided board with two different Roman provinces to play Concordia on.
In Britannia, players start in the south and expand north, but the map has fewer cities than in the standard game, which makes things much tighter. However, there are no rules changes.
The Germania map is all land so 'sea' colonists move along the rivers. In addition, the Roman castles on the map contain bonus tokens for players to acquire.
For 2-5 players (with base game), aged 12+, playing time 100 minutes: £12.00 (£10.00 outside the UK)

Concordia: Roma/Sicilia
Another double-sided board with two different Roman provinces (the city of Rome itself and the island of Sicily) to play Concordia on.
Roma has players constructing the city across the seven hills, adding famous buildings like the Circus Maximus, the Colosseum and the Forum. As there are no seas on the map, ships travel along a track that brings bonus goods and opportunities to build or score. This expansion also adds Venus to the Gods, providing scoring for constructing Rome.
The problem with Sicily is Mount Etna. While the volcano remains dormant, all is well. However, sooner or later, it will begin to erupt, eventually halting all activity on the island. This adds a random element that makes players think carefully about their strategy.
For 2-5 players (with base game), aged 13+, playing time 60-100 minutes: £17.00 (£14.17 outside the UK)

Concordia: Salsa
In this case, "salsa" is "salted" in Latin and this expansion adds salt to the game as a wild resource, something I find really useful, and can be used with any of the Concordia maps. However, the bulk of the expansion is two new maps (hence the large box): Byzantium, centred on Asia Minor with the Balkans and eastern Mediterranean, and Hispania, focused on Spain and the western Mediterranean. The expansion also adds 'Forum' cards that give players
bonuses and abilities
and, again,
can be used with any map.
For 2-5 players (with base game), aged 12+, playing time 90 minutes: £25.00 (£20.83 outside the UK)

Concordia: Solitaria
As the name suggests, this expansion is a solitaire option for Concordia, providing a tricky opponent, Contrarius, to match yourself against. Contrarius can also be taken on by a team of two.
Essentially this is a replacement set of cards that provide an action for Contrarius as well the player. On top of this, special dice are used to provide some variety in Contrarius's actions. A great addition to the game.
For 1-2 players (with base game), aged 14+, playing time 30-60 minutes: £18.00 (£15.00 outside the UK)

Concordia: Forum cards mini-expansion
This is simply eight new Forum cards with a rule sheet and can be added to the game with or without any of the other expansions. (The punchboard also contains a mini-expansion – Privilege cards – for Navegador.)
For 2-5 players (with base game), aged 12+, playing time 60 minutes: £6.00 (£5.00 outside the UK)
