Dune: Imperium - Uprising
A development of 2020's Dune: Imperium, this is pretty much a revised edition of that game (and is even more highly rated on BGG). It is, of course, based on Frank Herbert's Dune books and, more obviously, the recent films. Thus, you are part of the struggle to control the desert planet of Arrakis and the all-important spice it produces.
Each player represents an important character from the story and has suitable special abilities. Victory points come from combat, intrigue and currying favour with the major factions (the Bene Gesserit, the Emperor, the Fremen and the Spacing Guild). And the first player to 10 points wins.
Mechanically, the heart of the game are the cards with players managing their own decks and playing cards from their current hand to do things. However, much of what they do with cards is place ‘Agents’ (worker pawns) on board spaces to take the action shown. The game is a clever combination of deck-building and worker placement.
I finally got to play the original game, Dune: Imperium, recently and was very taken with it. However, people tell me Uprising is even better, so that's what I've gone for. As well as revamping the original game, it adds a fifth player and a six-player game that is two teams of three.
For 1-4 or 6 players, aged 13+, playing time 1-2 hours: £50.00 (£41.67 tax free outside the UK)
