Castles of Mad King Ludwig
Ted Alspach's 2014 release is, in some ways, a development of his excellent Suburbia. This time, players are designing castles for King Ludwig, with rooms, corridors and gardens. Each addition scores points according to its relationships with existing rooms – and the ones placed later. However, the tiles are not just convenient squares and rectangles, but several interesting shapes.
The really clever bit is the cunning mechanism that sees the first player price up the available tiles each round. They choose last, so have to think carefully about the pricing. It's excellent stuff.
And then there are the secrets: Castles of Mad King Ludwig: Secrets is a clever expansion that adds a fifth player and more.
For 1-4 players, aged 10+, playing time 90 minutes: £40.00 (£33.33 outside the EU)
